米イリノイ州シカゴ近郊にある米マクドナルド本社で5月21日、1000人以上が押し寄せ、労働組合結成の権利や、最低賃金15ドル、従業員の待遇改善などの要求を掲げて抗議活動を行なった。

マクドナルドはその翌日の5月22日、本社敷地内での株主総会を控えていた。

警察は、不法侵入の容疑で138名を逮捕した（主催者側は、マクドナルド従業員以外に、労組関係者や聖職者ら36人が逮捕されたとしている）。また、デモ隊と、フル装備で警棒を手に暴動鎮圧にあたる警察官とがぶつかり合う様子を写した写真が多く出回った。

米労働統計局によると、同国のファストフード業界の従業員の平均時給は約9.08ドル、連邦最低賃金は時給7.25ドル。なお、マクドナルド従業員の9割はフランチャイズ店勤務で、同社は従業員の平均賃金を公表していない。
