ツール・ド・フランス第3ステージで、大勢の選手が巻き込まれる大クラッシュが発生した。大クラッシュの影響で、レースは一時中断。複数の選手が、リタイアする中、ゴール前の難所「ユイの壁(Mur de Huy)」を最初に登りきったホアキン・ロドリゲスが、第3ステージを制した。

大クラッシュした20名の選手の中には、前日マイヨ・ジョーヌ（総合1位）を獲得したファビアン・カンチェラーラ選手も含まれていた。カンチェラーラ選手は、自転車と一緒に宙返りし、草の上に叩きつけられた。

カンチェラーラ選手は、レースに復帰し、ゴールしたが、脊椎骨が骨折していることがわかり、リタイアした。

第3ステージの結果、総合1位は、クリス・フルーム選手になり、マイヨ・ジョーヌを獲得した。フルーム選手は、BBCに「イエロー・ジャージ（マイヨ・ジョーヌ）を着れることは最高の気分だ」と語った。
