ティラノサウルスか？日本最大級の肉食恐竜の歯、長崎で発見

全長10メートルを超えると見られる、ティラノサウルス科の恐竜の化石が長崎市内で見つかった。長崎市と福井県立恐竜博物館の発掘チームが7月14日に発表したと、毎日新聞などが報じた。

見つかったのは2本の歯の化石で、2014年5月、三ツ瀬層と呼ばれる8100万年前の白亜紀の地層から発掘された。大きいほうは縦の長さが8.2センチもあり、分析の結果、ティラノサウルス科の恐竜だと判明した。歯の形状や大きさが、北アメリカのティラノサウルスやアジアのタルボサウルスなどの大型種と似ているという。

これまでも福井や石川など5県でティラノサウルス科の化石は見つかっているが、いずれも体長3〜5メートルの小型のものだった。

47NEWSによると、恐竜博物館の宮田和周主任研究員は「日本最大の肉食恐竜だと思う。長崎市では他の化石も見つかっており、さまざまな恐竜が生息していたことを再確認した」と話しているという。
