ディズニーランドで、何かを指差すキャストの指先を注目したことがあるだろうか? 実はディズニーパークのキャストたちは、必ず1本ではなく2本で指差しをするのだ。

なぜ2本指なのか。ディズニーパークで働く現役キャストが匿名で教えてくれた。これはパークからの指示で行われおり、雇用時のトレーニングに組み込まれているという。

その理由については様々な憶測が飛び交っているようだが、匿名のキャストは教育担当者から「このジェスチャーは、ディズニーランドの創設者ウォルト・ディズニー氏の喫煙習慣に由来しており、ウォルトへの敬意を表しているものだ」と教えられたという。

また、指差しが失礼だと考えられている文化でも、2本指の方がまだ失礼にならないというウォルト・ディズニー社の判断もあるようだ。

2本指差しが実際にウォルト・ディズニー氏に由来していることが明らかになったのは、2013年にトム・ハンクスが映画「ウォルト・ディズニーの約束」のプロモーションで、トーク番組「エレンの部屋」に出演した時だった。ウォルト役を演じたハンクスは、司会のエレン・デジェネレスに「ウォルト・ディズニー社に保管されている古い写真には、ウォルトが指の間にタバコをはさんだまま、ディズニーパーク内のアトラクションを指差している姿が写っている」と話した

しかし、その後ウォルト・ディズニー社がパークと喫煙との関係を断ちたいと考え、写真を加工してウォルト氏の指の間にあったタバコを消してしまったそうだ。その結果、ウォルト・ディズニー氏が、パーク内で2本指で何かを指しているように見えるようになったのだという。

この「タバコなし」の2本指差しは、「ウォルト・ディズニーの約束」の中にも出てくる。

また、ディズニーパークでキャストが実際に2本指差しをしている写真もある。これは2012年にマジック・キングダムで撮影した写真だ。キャストが2本指差しでゲストに何かを伝えている。

ウォルト氏が肺がんで亡くなったことを考えれば、2本指差しは皮肉なジェスチャーだ。しかし今度ディズニーランドを訪れた際に、キャストに何かを指差すようお願いしてみるのも面白いかもしれない。
