脳細胞からストッキングまで……。顕微鏡ごしの世界は宝石のように美しい(画像集)

一見すると、それは蛍光色に塗り分けられた不思議なCGに見える。しかし、それは実際に存在する「ミクロの世界」の顕微鏡写真だ。脳細胞のシナプス、ナイロン製のストッキング、巻き貝の舌の表面。普段だったら小さすぎて気づかない世界には、想像を超えるアートが広がっている。

これは「ニコン・スモールワールド顕微鏡写真コンテスト」で上位に選ばれた写真だ。顕微鏡販売を手がけるニコングループのアメリカ法人「ニコン・インストゥルメンツ」が毎年実施しているもので、第46回目となる2020年の審査結果が、10月13日に発表された。

プレスリリースによると、1位に選ばれたのは、熱帯魚「ゼブラフィッシュ」の断面図。蛍光タンパク質を使ってリンパ管をオレンジ色、ウロコを青色に着色している。350枚以上の写真を合成したものだ。

撮影したアメリカ国立衛生研究所のダニエル・カストラノバ博士は「この写真は美しいだけでなく、ゼブラフィッシュがリンパ管の発達のモデルとしていかに強力かを示しています」と話した。リンパ管の研究は、がんやアルツハイマー病など、人間の脳に発生する病気の治療に関連する研究を促進する可能性があるという。
