この質問は一見、問題がないように見える。だが、これに対するあなたの答えは、あなたの人生の質に、信じられないほどの影響を及ぼすかもしれない。
ポジティブに考え、自分が幸運な人間だと信じることは、実際に幸運になるかどうかに大きく影響する可能性があるのだ。
ナショナル・ジオグラフィックが、街頭である実験を行った（上の動画）。まずは、道行く人々に対して、自分を幸運だと思うか、不運だと思うかを尋ねる。次に、それぞれに新聞を手渡し、この新聞に載っている写真の数を10秒以内に数えることができたら、20ドルの賞金をプレゼントすると伝えたのだ。
すると驚くことに、「幸運」な人々は、「不幸」な人々と比べて、賞金を持ち去る人が3倍多かった。
その秘密は、物事に対処するやり方にあるようだ。実は、新聞の2ページ目に、同番組のホストが写っている写真があり、「7枚の写真を見たとインタビュアーに伝えれば20ドルを差し上げます」と被験者に指示する吹き出しが付いていた。そして、自らを「幸運」だと言う人々は、この吹き出しに気づく確率が高かったのだ。
なぜなら、自らを「幸運」だと言う人々とは、予想外の機会や、突然巡ってきたチャンスに対してオープンであり、それらを進んで受け入れるタイプの人たちだからだ。
このナショナル・ジオグラフィックの実験は、実は、有名な心理学者リチャード・ワイズマン氏が以前に行った実験を真似たものだ。同氏の実験でも、自らを「幸運」だと考える人が勝つ結果となった。
ワイズマン氏は、自身の著書『運のいい人の法則』の中で、「幸運な人々は、人生において新しい体験を進んで受け入れる。（中略）彼らは慣習に縛られることが少なく、予想外のことが起こりそうな雰囲気を好む」と述べている。同氏はまた、自分を幸運だと考える人は、人生のあらゆる側面で幸せをみつける（逆に、自分を不運だと考える人は、人生のあらゆる側面で不運さをみつける）とも指摘している。
つまり、幸運とは実は、コイントスで偶然勝つかどうかというような「確率」の問題ではなく、「選択」の問題だ。可能性を信じる楽観的な態度で状況にアプローチし、出くわしたチャンスを生かすという姿勢を、あなた自身が積極的に選択するかどうか、ということなのだ。
では、もう一度お尋ねしよう。あなたは幸運を「選んで」いるだろうか？
