驚くなかれ、猫だって何にでもなれるのだ。 外科の助手、エクササイズのパートナー、サーカスのパフォーマー、ニュースキャスター、セラピスト、警備員、牧師、市長…… 例を挙げればきりがない。

10月にアメリカで出版された「キャッツ・オン・ザ・ジョブ（猫、仕事中）」は、仕事をする50匹の猫を紹介している。

ベビーシッター

猫のチェズニーは、イギリスの動物保護施設で、子猫ジョイのベビーシッターだった。

著者のリサ・ロガックさんは、どの猫もとても働き者で、この中からお気に入りを選ぶのは難しいと話す。しかしその中でも特に彼女を魅了したのは、登下校時に交通指導をする猫と警察猫、それに、6月に亡くなった日本の有名なたま駅長だという。

牧師

キャシディ牧師として知られる猫のシスコは、ユニバーサル・ライフ教会の牧師だ。

また、ニューハンプシャー州に住んでいるロガックさんは「この州に住む農家猫と気象観測猫が特に好きなんです」とも話してくれた。

俳優

この猫は、日本のピザハットの広告に登場した。実際の店舗を訪れたお客さんは、猫ではなく人間が働いているのを見て落胆したそうだ。

この本を書きながら、猫は自分の個性に合った仕事を見つけている、ということにロガックさんは気が付いたそうだ。

サーカスのパフォーマー、セラピスト、生薬の薬剤師。本で紹介されているいずれの職業に就いている猫も、強制的に働かされているわけではない。むしろ、水を得た魚のように働いている。

フロリダキーズ諸島で働くサニー船長もそうだ。サニー船長は、双胴船の乗船を手伝っている。

「サニー船長は水を怖がることなく、船長としての役目を立派にこなしています。彼が持っているスキルや才能が、たとえば書店のような場所でも発揮されたかどうかわかりません」と、ロガックさんは話す。「これは、本で紹介している他の猫についても言えることです」

交通指導員

セーブルは、ワシントン州ウェストリッチランドにあるエンタープライズ中学校で交通指導員として働く。1日に2回出勤して、登下校時に子供たちが安全に道路を渡れるよう見守っている。

アレルギーが原因で、今は猫を飼っていないロガックさんだが、以前は猫と一緒に暮らしていた。本を書くにつれ、彼女は自分が愛する飼い猫をいかに甘やかしていたかに気が付いたそうだ。

「勤勉な猫がたくさんいると知りました。どの猫も、私が何年も一緒に暮らした猫たちとは違います」

犬のトレーナー

チートはいなくなったペットを探すNPO「ミッシング・ペット・パートナーシップ」で、ペット探偵として働く犬の訓練をしている。
