A cat looks at a fisherman pulling a fish out of the water at the port of Sevastopol on March 8, 2014. Pro-Kremlin militia fired warning shots as unarmed foreign observers tried to enter Crimea while Russia stepped up its Cold War-style standoff with the West over Ukraine by threatening to keep Washington from checking on its nuclear arms. Cats rest next to a man fishing as a ship is docked at Port Said, about 100 kms northeast of Cairo, on November 24, 2008. Increasingly brazen piracy off the coast of Somalia is jeopardising traffic heading to and from the Suez Canal, a strategic shipping route and key earner for Egypt\'s economy. Roughly 18,000 ships pass every year through the 190-kilometre (118-mile) waterway, constructed in 1869 to link the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean. This traffic accounts for 7.5 percent of world commerce annually. AFP PHOTO/CRIS BOURONCLE (Photo credit should read CRIS BOURONCLE/AFP/Getty Images) (credit:CRIS BOURONCLE via Getty Images)

A cat sits on a straw rug amid fishing nets in the ancient port of Sidon on the southern coast of Lebanon on a cold and rainy day in the east Mediterranean country. The Lebanese are preparing for the expected arrival of \'Alexa,\' a winter weather front that is forecast to bring several days of rain and snow for Lebanon, and a steep drop in temperature. Spike was old and ailing by the time he moved aboard the boat, but he always loved coming out on deck to sniff the morning breeze. \n \nSpike the Cat found us when we lived in the country. One day, there he was, hanging out in the treeline at the edge of the property. He was an adolescent then, in the spring of 1991. Out came the tuna, and in came Spike.\n\nSpike was really a golden lab in a cat\'s body: he was everyone\'s buddy and as mellow a cat as ever there was. Spike especially liked contractors, probably because he could walk all over their papers and rub up against them when we met at the kitchen table. He liked floor projects (packing boxes, cutting fabric, etc.) for the same reason. Spike lived with lots of female cats over the years, and he was unfailingly subservient and polite to them. Let a male cat come onto the property, though, and Spike turned into the Tasmanian Devil. As a rodent catcher, Spike was unrivaled.\n\nEventually Spike retired and became a full-time indoor cat, content finally just to look out the window while I worked in the garden. Near the end of his life, we moved onto our boat. Spike loved it! He was always in the pilot house when we were underway, and he especially enjoyed watching the action when we left the dock or returned to port. The only problem was keeping him on the boat, since he enjoyed socializing with the other people in the marina and lounging on the warm dock.\n\nSpike passed away in July 2006 after a long and happy life. We miss him, but these photos bring back happy memories of a great cat. (credit:A.Davey/Flickr)
