「ここはわたしの居場所」画家オキーフが本当に望んでいた人生――晩年の家をめぐる

20世紀のアメリカ現代美術を代表する女性画家、ジョージア・オキーフ。彼女が、62歳から亡くなるまで30数年を過ごした、2つの家をご存知だろうか。

20世紀のアメリカ現代美術を代表する女性画家、ジョージア・オキーフ。彼女が、62歳から1986年に亡くなるまでの30数年を過ごした、2つの家をご存知だろうか。

ニューメキシコ州の荒々しいゴーストランチと緑豊かなアビキュー。この2つの地で、オキーフは傑作を生み出していった。

「ここはわたしの居場所。心が静かです。

わたしの皮膚がここの土地に近いと感じている」

彼女が「わたしの居場所」と語った終の住処を紹介する写真集『ジョージア・オキーフとふたつの家 ゴーストランチとアビキュー』（KADOKAWA）が2015年12月、初めて出版された。本著では、オキーフ美術館の学芸員ラインズと、オキーフの家で最期まで身のまわりの世話をしたロペスが、この地で生まれた彼女の傑作を紹介している。

ニューヨークで華々しく活躍したオキーフは、本来の自分ではなかった――。彼女が本当に望んだのは、どんな暮らしだったのか。この地から、どんな作品が生まれたのか。以下に、2つの家と作品の一部を紹介する。
