2003年、カウアイ島の海でサーフィンをしていたハミルトンはサメに襲われて左腕を失った。13歳の時だ。それでもプロのサーファーになるという夢を諦めなかったハミルトンは、1カ月後には海に戻ってきた。そして2007年、プロとなった。

「事故に遭ったのがまだ小さい頃だったのは幸いだったかもしれません。それを受け入れて立ち向かうことができたのですから」 と彼女は言う。「絶対にやり遂げてみせる、と心に決めたのです」

そうして彼女はやり遂げた。2014年のはじめ、ハミルトンは「パイプライン・ウイメンズ・プロ2014」で優勝を果たした。そして今、自分の前半生を綴ったドキュメンタリー映画 「Surfs Like A Girl 」 の制作を進めている。
