「起きて! ゴールしなくちゃ」転倒したランナーは、助け合ってゴールした【リオオリンピック】

これこそがオリンピック精神だと教えてくれる、素晴らしい出来事が起こった。

8月16日に行われた、陸上女子5000メートルで、ニュージーランドのニッキー・ハンブリン選手が転倒。その後ろに続いていたアメリカのアビー・ダゴスティノ選手も共に倒れた。

先に立ち上がったダゴスティノ選手は、そのまま走り続けずに、ライバルであるハンブリン選手に「起きて、起きて、ゴールしなくちゃ。オリンピックなんだから。私たちはゴールしなくちゃいけない」と励ましたと、スポーツ専門チャンネルESPNが伝えている。

ハンブリン選手は起き上がり、2人はゴールを目指した。 しかし、ダゴスティノ選手は膝を痛めていて、再びトラックにうずくまってしまった。それを見たハンブリン選手も立ち止まり、助けの手を差し伸べた。しかし、ダゴスティノ選手はすぐには走り出せず、先に走り続けるようハンブリン選手に告げた。

ダゴスティノ選手は17分10秒のタイムで最下位でゴール、ハンブリン選手は16分43秒のタイムで最下位から2番目でゴールした。ゴールした後、2人はゴールラインで抱き合った。

その後、ハンブリン選手はダゴスティノ選手を車椅子に乗せる手助けをした。

ガーディアン紙によれば、転倒した時のことを、ハンブリン選手はこう振り返っている。

「転んだ時『何が起こったの、どうして私は地面の上にいるの?』と思いました。そして突然、肩に手がかけられたんです。そして『起きて、起きて、ゴールしなくちゃ』と励ます声が聞こえました。アビーに本当に感謝しています。彼女こそ、オリンピック精神の持ち主です。しかも、私たちは初めて出会ったんです。素晴らしい人です」

自分のことだけを考えず、助け合ってゴールした2人に、最後にいいニュースが待っていた。予選通過できなかったのは転倒が原因だとして、決勝への参加が認められたのだ。

足の怪我が治っていれば、2人は8月19日に行われる決勝に臨む。
