自分で折った紙飛行機を、スマートフォンを使って自由自在に飛ばせるキット「PowerUp 3.0」が登場した。
最新機能が付いたこの小さなおもちゃは、懐かしい手作りの紙飛行機に、ハイテク機器を組み合わせている。キットの素材は衝撃に強いカーボンファイバーで、リチウムポリマー充電池を搭載。上昇・下降の推力調整や、左右旋回操作が可能だ。1回の充電で10分のフライトができ、操作範囲は55メートルだという。
毎年ニューヨークで開催される「おもちゃフェア」で2013年「科学優秀賞」を受賞したが、それも当然の楽しいおもちゃだ。冒頭の動画では、実際に飛んでいるところを確認できる。
製作者が、量産と商品化を目指して資金調達サイト「Kickstarter」で出資者を募ったところ、目標5万ドルの10倍を超える52万ドル以上がすでに集まっている。
出資は、2014年1月5日まで受け付けており、出資額に応じてさまざまな製品や特典が得られる。予備のプロペラ等が入った「基本パッケージ」は40ドルだ（日本では、こちらのサイトで、8090円で予約購入可能）。
