上記の動画では、女性がニューヨークの地下鉄で1本1ドルまたは1ダース11ドルでバラを売っている。そこに一人の男性が現れ、140ドルですべて買うと申し出たのだ。だが彼は花を自分で持って行かなかった。その代わりに、女性に現金を支払った後、彼はそれらをすべて無料で配るように言ったのだ。
「お願いします」。花売りに現金を支払った後、男性はこう言った。「バラをみんなに配って。売らなくていいから、とにかくみんなにあげてください」。そして次の駅で彼は電車を降りた。
マンハッタンでデザイン会社を経営するマリア・ロペスさんはこの電車に乗り合わせ、その素晴らしい光景をカメラに収めた。「その女性を見て、心から彼女の気持ちが理解できました」。2年前の2013年にこの動画を撮影したロペスさんは、ハフポストUS版に対してそう語った。「だから撮影したんです」。彼女がYouTubeにこの動画を投稿したのは2013年のことだが、20日にRedditに投稿されてから注目を集めるようになった。
「彼は天使のようでした」とロペスさんは続けた。「彼はふっといなくなってしまったんです」
花を売っていた女性は胸に手を当て、涙を流した。
「現実に優しい人がいるんだという安心から、彼女は泣き出してしまったんだと思います」。ロペスさんはこう話した。「この小さな親切は、とても大きなものです。それは世界に愛や優しさが欠けていることの表れでもあります。みんなそういうものを切実に求めているんだと思います」。
お金を受け取った後、女性は電車内の人々に向けて無料でバラを配ると呼びかけた。
「いつもはぴりぴりしている電車内ですが、その時は雰囲気が一変しました」とロペスさんは語った。「それは私たち全員が人間であるという、素晴らしい感覚でした」。
