島に押し寄せるシャーベットの波、シャッキシャキ

マサチューセッツ州のナンタケット島のジョナサン・ナイマーフロー氏は、約マイナス7.2℃という寒さに見舞われた先週、島のビーチに半分凍りついた状態の波が岸に近づいてくるというこれまで見たことがない光景を目にした。

マサチューセッツ州のナンタケット島を拠点に活動する写真家そしてサーファーのジョナサン・ナイマーフロー氏は、約マイナス7.2℃という寒さに見舞われた先週、島のビーチで、これまで見たことがない光景を目にした。

解けかけた雪のように、半分凍りついた状態の波が岸に近づいてきていたのだ。

「これほどゆっくりとした速度で波が動くなんて全く信じられず、とても奇妙な風景でした」と、ナイマーフロー氏はハフィントンポストUS版に対して語った。

その日は風が吹き荒れていたので、ナイマーフロー氏は海が洗濯機のような状態になっているのではないかと考えていたそうだ。だが、実際に海岸へ行って目にしたのは、高さ2~3フィート(約60~90センチメートル)の波がゆっくりと岸に打ち寄せてくる様子だった。

「かなり凍っていたので、海水はシャキシャキの『Slurpee』(アメリカで人気のフローズンドリンク)のようでした」と、ナイマーフロー氏は説明する。「砂浜から300ヤード(約274メートル)向こうの沖の方までの海岸線の一帯が、Slurpeeのような海水で埋め尽くされていて、岸に近づいた部分では、うねりが大きくなって波ができていました。解けかけた氷のような状態でなければ、サーフィンができたでしょう」

こんな貴重な機会に、ナイマーフロー氏がカメラを持っていたのはとても幸運なことだ。彼が撮影した波は1フィート(約30センチメートル)程度のものだという。
