白黒の写真をカラーに変えるだけで、歴史は生き生きとした生命を持ち始める。
アルバート・アインシュタイン博士やチャールズ・ダーウィン、マーク・トウェインの写真を、以前にも見たことはあるだろうが、どれも白黒であり、彼らが実際に生きていたときの姿とは違う。
冒頭の写真は、1916年に撮影されたチャーリー・チャップリン。ちょうど27歳になったところだ。特徴的な口ひげと濃いメーキャップが無い写真は、この有名な喜劇俳優のほんとうの姿をかいま見せてくれている。色が付いたことで、この若者は、まるで21世紀の現在に生きているようだ。
この写真を彩色したのは、デンマークのアーティストであり、英語と歴史を学ぶ学生でもあるマッズ・マドセン氏。同氏は、古い白黒の肖像写真を彩色する技を自学自習で学んだ。最初は、個人的に興味をもっていた、アメリカの南北戦争の兵士たちの写真を彩色することから始めたという。
