過去につらい体験をした人は、現在のできごとをより楽しめるようになる、という研究結果が発表された。
カナダのブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学で心理学を研究するエリザベス・W・ダン準教授、同大学のアリッサ・クロフト氏、ハーバード大学のジョーディ・コイドバック氏が共同で研究し、学術誌「Journal Social Psychological and Personality Science」に研究論文を発表したものだ。
研究者らは成人1万4986人を対象に、自身の不幸な経験（離婚や身内の死など）について調査し、それが過去のできごとか、現在進行中のできごとかを尋ねた。それから、現実世界での楽しいイベント（滝を眺める、ハイキングに出かけるなど）を6種類提示し、そういった活動を「楽しめる能力」について調査した。
その結果、現在も離婚協議中であるなど、つらいできごとの真っただ中にいる人は、「ポジティブな状況であっても、楽しもうという気持ちが持てない」と訴えていた。不幸なできごとのせいで、日常にささやかな喜びを見出すことができなくなってしまったのだ。
しかし、「過去につらい思いを経験した人は、ものごとを楽しむ能力が高まっている」ことも、研究チームは発見した。言い換えれば、心の痛みを知った人は、小さな幸せを見つけることが上手になったわけだ。
論文は、「悪い1日のおかげで、良い1日を一層楽しむことができるという考え方を、この研究は裏づけた」と述べている。
