アメリカ大統領夫人のミシェル・オバマさんが、3月18日からの日本訪問する。この訪問の中でミシェルさんは、安倍晋三首相夫人の昭恵さんと共に、世界の少女の教育振興を呼びかける新たなパートナーシップを発表する。

ミシェルさんは15日付のウォール・ストリート・ジャーナル(WSJ)に寄稿した記事のなかで、日本を訪問する目的について「目指す課題の大きさを考えれば、アメリカだけ、また数カ国による協力だけでは十分とはいえない。日本から世界中の国々に、少女たちが学ぶための支援への参加を呼びかけたい」と述べ、日本とパートナーシップを締結すると述べた。

世界の少女の教育推進について、ミシェルさんは3日、オバマ大統領と共にホワイトハウスで演説し、「Let Girls Learn(女子に教育を)」構想を発表。世界中の少女が教育を受ける機会を増やし、生活水準を高めることを目指して、アメリカ政府が支援を行うとした。

2015年はカンボジアなど11カ国で活動を開始するとしており、日本訪問もこの取組の一環とされる。昭恵さんは途上国での教育支援に取り組んでおり、日本の青年海外協力隊とアメリカ政府が途上国にボランティアを送って支援する「平和部隊」との連携強化など、日米が協力して女子教育の普及に取り組む必要性があると発信する

ミシェルさんはWSJの記事の中で、「Let Girls Learn」の取り組みは、教育を受けられない国の人々のためであるばかりではなく、既に教育を受けることができているアメリカの若者に対しても効果があると期待を寄せた。

「Let Girls Learn」を通じて、アメリカの少年少女たちに、世界中で少女が教育を受けるために挑戦を続けていることを知ってほしいと思います。考えてもらいたいのです。アメリカの子供たちが通う学校は、完璧とは程遠いかもしれない。もちろん私の夫は、完璧にするために頑張っているわけですが。それでもアメリカの子供たちは、学校に毎日通い、そして精いっぱい学ぶ責任があるのだと、考えてほしいのです。

挑戦を続ける少女たちは、毎日何マイルも学校に通い、毎夜何時間も勉強し、そして、学ぶことなど必要ないとする人たちからも耐え続けています。彼女たちが犠牲を払っているのです。世界中の人々も、達成できるはずです。彼女たちを助けるための支援の約束、そして家族との約束、グループとしての約束、国としての約束を。
