FacebookやInstagramなどのSNSで、毎週木曜日になると過去の写真を投稿する「スローバック・サーズデイ」が人気を博しているが、オレゴン州ポートランドに住む25歳のアート・ディレクター、ダニエル・デルフさんが思いついた“お母さんの若い頃の写真に、自分の写真をフォトショップではめ込んでみる”というアイデアもスローバック・サーズデイで使えるかもしれない。
「私はよく、もしママと私が友達同士で、一緒に大きくなったらどんな感じだろう、と想像して楽しんでいました」 とデルフさんは彼女のウェブサイトに書いている。「クラスは同じだったかな、同じユーモアのセンスをもっていたかな、みんなから、二人はいつも一緒の仲良しさんだね、と言われていたかも……。そして私の姿を母の写真に重ねてみて確信しました。ママとは本当にいい友達になれただろうな、って」
ニュースサイト「Today.com」の記事によると、デルフさんが最初にこのアイデアを思いついたのは、Instagramの写真を見ていて、たまたま友達の母親が写った古い写真を見つけた時だという。すぐに母親のジャニス・トーマスさんに子供の頃の写真を送って欲しいと頼んだが、それは思ったより難しかった。母の写真は2004年のハリケーンでほとんど破損してしまったからだ。そのため、彼女のアイデアを形にした「もし私があの頃の母を知っていたら……」 という写真集は完成までに6カ月かかった。
「当時は写真の撮り方が今とは違っていたということが分かりました」 とデルフさんは「デイリーニュース」紙に語った。「アルバムに貼って、みんなで見て楽しむために写真を撮っていたのです。それに対して、私たちの世代は携帯で自分の写真からサンドイッチの写真まで何枚も気軽に撮れますよね」
デルフさんが出来上がった写真集を母親に見せたとき、母は感激したという。
「ママは本当にこの作品を気に入ってくれました。私の作った写真集を見て泣きそうになったそうです。毎日見てくれていて、ママも私と同じように、2人が一緒に育っていたら仲良しだったろうな、と思っているそうです」
