アメリカのホワイトハウスが、トランスジェンダーの女性を採用した。トランスジェンダーであることを自らカミングアウトしている人が、ホワイトハウスに勤務するのは初めて。AP通信などが8月18日に報じた。
女性はラフィ・フリードマンガースパンさん。「全米トランスジェンダー平等センター」で政策顧問を務めていたが、今回抜てきされたという。これまで国内のトランスジェンダーの問題、特に人種や貧困の問題を抱えるトランスジェンダーの生活改善に取り組んできた。今後は、ホワイトハウス事務局の人事部門で福祉・人材採用ディレクターとして働くという。
オバマ政権はトランスジェンダーなどのLGBT（性的マイノリティ）の権利向上を主要な政策に掲げている。CNNによると、ジャレット大統領上級顧問は、この人事について「オバマ政権の価値観を反映したものだ」と説明したという。
