親のいないナマケモノの赤ちゃんたちは、母親の母乳から抗体を得ることができないため、感染症の危険がとても高い。動画の2匹は、重度の疥癬(ダニの寄生によって起こる皮膚感染症)を患っている。
けれども心配は不要だ。世界唯一のナマケモノ保護施設をコスタリカで運営しているジュディー・エイビー・アロヨ氏が、効果的な治療法を考え出したからだ。
まずは、ダニが体毛中に潜伏している可能性があるため、全身の毛をバリカンで剃る必要がある。次に、硫黄とラードで作られた膏薬を全身に塗り、皮膚の痛みを和らげ、生き残っているダニを窒息させる。
最後に、膏薬を舐めてしまうのを防ぐため、カラフルな包帯で全身を包む。このようにすると、赤ちゃん用パジャマを着ているように見えるという効果もある。
以下の動画では、この双子と同じくらいキュートなナマケモノたちが、ハーブ湯に浸かり、湯上がりに「おやつ」(ハイビスカス)を食べる様子が紹介されている。
また、以下の動画では、ナマケモノの赤ん坊「シド」が、クマのぬいぐるみを抱きながらミルクを飲んでいる。動物番組専門チャンネル「アニマルプラネット」の解説によると、孤児のナマケモノはケージの中で、動物のぬいぐるみにくっついて過ごしているのだという。
