男性の名前はドナルド・グールドさん。彼は、誰もが弾けるように公共スペースにピアノを置くアートプロジェクト「サラソータ・キーズ・ピアノ・プロジェクト」で路上に置かれたピアノを弾いている。

彼がアメリカのロックバンド「スティクス」の曲「永遠の航海」を演奏している姿が撮影され、Facebookにアップされると、動画は一気に広まって瞬く間に大勢の人たちにシェアされた。

突然有名になったグールドさんだが、SNSによってもたらされた名声は、51歳の彼にとって驚きだったようだ。

地元のテレビ局「WWSB」の取材に、グールドさんは「ピアノの上に帽子を置いて、チップを何ドルかもらえればいいと思っていたんです。こんなことになるとは思っていませんでした」と答えている。

WWSBによると、グールドさんは若い頃は海兵隊に所属し、クラリネットを演奏していたという。兵役を終えた後は、ミシガンの大学に入って音楽教育の勉強をしていたが、学費が払えなくなったため退学して仕事に就き、家庭を持ったそうだ。

しかし、1998年に妻が亡くなりグールドさんの人生は一変した。グールドさんは薬物中毒になり、息子は児童養護施設に引き取られた。その後、彼はサラソータに移り、ミュージシャンのポール・ロナード氏と演奏活動を始めた。

サラソータではグールドさんは「ブーン」という愛称で呼ばれ、1日5曲を演奏し人々を楽しませている。レパートリーは、ビリー・ジョエルの「ピアノ・マン」から、バッハの「トッカータとフーガ ニ短調」と幅広い。

また、アメリカのワシントン州バンクーバーに住むホームレス男性、デビッド・アレン・ウェルシュさんも、2013年にリサイクルショップのピアノで演奏し、観客の涙を誘った。観客の一人は「彼が演奏を始めたとたん、私はコーヒーにむせてしまい、鼻からコーヒーが出てきた」とニュースの取材で答えている。

SNSで有名になったおかげで、グールドさんはホームレス状態から抜け出せそうだ。WWSBによると、彼の演奏の評判を聞いた地元のレストラン「サーフ・シャック」が、グールドさんに専属ミュージシャンのトライアウトを受けるよう勧めたという。合格すれば、彼はレストランの2階にあるピアノバーで演奏することになる。
