生まれたばかりの赤ちゃんがものを識別できる距離は30センチ――ノルウェーのオスロ大学の研究者らが、新生児にはどのように世界が見えているのかという研究結果を発表した。生後2〜3日の赤ちゃんは、30cmの距離であれば両親の顔の表情を認識できるという。
発表を行ったのは、オスロ大学名誉教授のスヴェイン・マグヌッセン氏ら。動画を使ったテストで、大人の視力から新生児の視力を計算によって推測した。30cmの距離であれば顔の動きを捉えることができるが、60cm以上になると、ぼやけてしまうのだという。「微笑んでいる顔」や「驚いている顔」などが判別しやすかった。
30cmはだいたい、母親が赤ん坊をあやす距離と同じだ。イギリス・ガーディアン紙が6月29日に報じた記事によると、マグヌッセン氏は「赤ちゃんは母親の表情は見ることができるが、どういう意味があるのかを理解しているわけではない」としている。
