台湾の司法最高機関にあたる司法院大法官会議は5月24日、「同性同士での結婚を認めない民法は憲法に反する」という判断を下した。BBCやテレグラフ紙などが報じた。

アジア初の同性婚認可に向けて、台湾は大きな一歩を踏み出したことになる。

異性間だけ結婚を認めている現行法について、大法官会議は「憲法が保障する法の下の平等や結婚の自由に反する」との見解を示した。

判決を受け、台湾政府は2年以内に民法を改正するか、新法をつくらなければならない。

2015年の世論調査で、「婚姻の平等化」を支持すると回答した人が約70％に上るなど、台湾ではLGBTへの理解が進んでいる。LGBTらが街頭で人権を訴えるイベントも2016年には8万人が参加するなどアジア最大級だ。

2015年には、同性のカップルを結婚に準ずる関係と公的に認める「パートナーシップ制度」も始まり、現在1000組以上のカップルがこの制度を利用しているが、今回法律を改正することでより結婚を平等化するよう求めていた。

日本でも同様の制度があるのは、6月1日にスタートする札幌市を入れて6自治体にとどまる。今回の判決が日本を含め他国にどう影響を及ぼすか、注目される。
