「実際に私がカメラを構えている姿を見て、医師は少し驚いたようです(笑)」

カリフォルニア州を拠点に活動する写真家のリサ・ロビンソン・ウォード氏は、普段は結婚写真やポートレート写真を専門にしている。しかし、2015年に妊娠していることがわかった時、彼女は新たなテーマに挑戦したいと思った。それは、自分自身の出産写真だ。

妊娠は、ロビンソン・ウォード氏にとって嬉しい驚きだった。彼女と彼女の夫は、現在9才になる長男が生まれた後、もう1人子供が欲しいと思っていたが、その後、2度の流産を経験していた。現在6カ月になる娘アノラを授かったのは、次の赤ちゃんを諦めようとした時だったという。

ロビンソン・ウォード氏は、写真を撮影すれば、冷静さを保つことができるし、写真に集中して痛みを忘れられるだろうと考えたそうだ。しかし、本当にうまくいくかどうか不安もあったという。「本当に出産中に写真を撮れるのか、正直わかりませんでした」と告白している。

しかし、撮影は成功した。写真には、めったに見ることができない貴重な出産の時間が記録されている。彼女は、その時の気持ちも書き綴っている。

出産前の1週間、陣痛の痛みが押し寄せたり引いたりしていました。破水したのは午前3時でした。私たちは荷物とカメラを持って車に乗り、病院へ向かいました。病院は近くにありました。病院に着いた時は、陣痛のたびに体が震えて、カメラを構えるなんてできないと思いました。

陣痛の間に、点滴やモニターなど周りのものを撮影できました。気持ちが張りつめていました。

幸運にも、硬膜外麻酔をしたらだいぶ自由に体を動かせるようになりました。分娩は14時間かかりましたが、そんなに長い時間かかったようには感じませんでした。時間があっという間にすぎました。うまく痛みを抑えてもらったのが、理由の一つだと思います。

そして、夫が本当に良く支えてくれたことも。

担当の医師には、出産前に撮影してもいいかどうか、確認していました。医師は全面的に賛成してくれていました。しかし、実際に私がカメラを構えている姿を見て、彼は少し驚いたようです(笑)。

いきんでいる時にも、写真を撮影しました! いきむ準備をして、カメラを顔の前に構えました。自分が何を撮影しているのか、ちゃんとピントが合っているのか、わかりませんでした。でも、私は集中できました。

写真を撮影したら、出産の瞬間を感じられないんじゃないかと心配していました。だけど、そんなことはありませんでした。娘が私の体から出てきた瞬間を、間違いなく感じていました。

写真を見返すと、その時自分がどんな気持ちだったのかを正確に思い出すことができます。娘が生まれた瞬間を、もう一度感じられるのです。

初めて娘を見た時の、夫の顔が忘れられません。夫は泣いていました。心の底から幸せだったんです。
