アメリカ・サンディエゴに暮らす Toczko夫婦――アレクサンダーさんとジャネットさんは、75年近く結婚生活を送り、最期のときまで一緒にいたいと思っていました。
6月17日、75周年となる結婚記念日のほんの数週間前に、ふたりの願いは叶いました。アレクサンダーさんは、ジャネットさんの腕のなかで亡くなりました。そしてその24時間後に、ジャネットさんも永遠の眠りについたのです。
「ふたりは、家のベッドでお互いの腕のなかで手を握り合って最期をむかえたい、と話していました」。夫婦の息子、リチャードさんはABCに語りました。
この願いを知ったホスピスは、アレクサンダーさんのために家にベッドを運び込み、ジャネットさんが使っているベッドのすぐ隣に並べました。

「そして、彼は、彼女の腕のなかで亡くなりました。まさに望んでいたように」と、夫婦の娘・エーメさんは語った。「私は、そばに寄って、母に父が旅立ったことを伝えたんです」。すると母は、父を抱いて、いったのです。「見て、これがあなたが望んだことよ。あなたは、私の腕で亡くなったの。あなたを愛してる。あなたを愛しているわ。待っていてね。わたしもすぐに行くからね」と。
ふたりは、小学校のときから付き合っていて、6月29日には、75周年の記念日をお祝いするつもりでした。家族は、花や風船を持ち寄って、ふたりが亡くなる前に、一足早く大切な記念日をお祝いしました。
