ママになったからといって「お母さんらしい」外見にならなくたっていい、現代の母親像はもっと多様で自由でいいんだ。そんなメッセージを伝える写真家がいる。
その写真家、アメリカに住む32歳のセリア・サンチェスさんは23歳の時に母親になった。
「母親になった後、保育園のお母さんたちとは違っているように感じました」と、サンチェスさんはハフィントンポストUK版に語った。その違いが、写真を撮り始めるきっかけになったという。
「お母さんになったからといって自分らしいスタイルでいることを諦めなくたっていい、と写真で伝えられたら素晴らしいんじゃないかと思ったんです。既存の『母親像』とは違うイメージを写真でみせたかったんです」

過去3年間、サンチェスさんは自分と同じように感じている人たちの写真を撮り続けてきた。これまで何度も「お母さんのようには見えないね」と言われ続けたサンチェスさんが写真で問いかけたかったのは、「母親像って何だろう」ということだ。
サンチェスさんのカメラが捉える「お母さん」には見えないと言われるのは女性たちは、優しく子供たちを見つめる。「外見で中身を判断しないで」――写真にはそんな気持ちが込められている。
