アメリカ政府がアフガニスタンの反政府武装勢力タリバンに拘束されていたアメリカ兵の解放と引き換えに、タリバンの捕虜5人の移送に応じたことについて、アメリカのヘーゲル国防長官は6月1日、今後、タリバンとの本格的な和平交渉が実現することもありうるとの認識を示した。
一方のタリバンは、幹部の釈放をアメリカと本格的な和平交渉に入るうえでの前提条件としてきており、今後、両者の和平交渉にまで進展するのか注目されている。NHKニュースなどが報じた。
アメリカのヘーゲル国防長官は1日、アフガニスタンに向かう機内で会見し、5人の釈放について、「タリバンとの対話の打開策につながるかはまだ分からないが、うまく行けばその可能性はある」と述べ、今回の対応によって今後タリバンとの本格的な和平交渉が実現することもありうるとの認識を示しました。

解放されたのはボウ・バーグダール米陸軍軍曹（28）で、タリバンによって5年近く拘束されていた。アメリカはその見返りに、キューバにあるグアンタナモ収容所で拘束していたタリバンの幹部5人を釈放した。
一方、タリバンは最高指導者オマル師の名前で声明を発表し、「偉大な勝利だ。家族らに心から祝福を伝える」として5人の釈放を歓迎した。
所在不明のオマル師名義の声明が出されるのは異例。
声明は「イスラム国家であるアフガン、すべてのムジャヒディン（イスラム戦士）、拘束されていた者たちの家族・親族に対し、心からの祝福を伝えたい」と述べた。また、米国との仲介役を務めたカタールのタミム首長に謝意を表明した。

アメリカ政府とタリバンの「捕虜交換」について、一部の共和党議員からは批判の声が上がっている。
タリバン幹部5人との交換については米共和党議員らから疑問視する声が上がっており、 ジョン・マケイン議員はCBSの番組に対し、5人が非常に危険な人物だと指摘。アフガン当局も、5人が再び反政府活動に参加する可能性があると懸念を表明した。

今回の解放はカタール政府が仲介役を務めた。解放した5人の身柄はカタールで管理下に置かれるという。
