朝日新聞デジタルによると、ブルンジでは憲法で大統領の3選を禁じており、この1カ月間、反大統領派の抗議デモが続き少なくとも数十人が死亡、約4万人が隣国のルワンダに避難している。

AFP通信によると、大統領の任期延長に反対して2月に解任されたゴドフロア・ニヨンバレ少将が13日にクーデターを宣言したが、ブルンジ国軍のプライム・ニヨンガボ参謀総長が国営ラジオで「ニヨンバレ少将のクーデターは阻止された」と発表した。

しかし、反大統領派のベノン・ヌダバネゼ警視総監はニヨンガボ参謀総長の声明を否定し、ブジュンブラの空港など主要施設は反大統領派が掌握していると主張し、軍内部や政府が分裂しているとみられる。

ロイターによると、ブジュンブラではヌクルンジザ大統領支持派と反大統領派の間で激しい戦闘が続き、約5万人の住民がタンザニア西部国境のタンガニーカ湖沿岸のカグンガ村に避難し、伝染病の発生が懸念されている。
