ビショフトゥで政府の弾圧に抗議するデモ参加者 (AP Photo)
エチオピアの首都アディスアベバ近郊のオロミア州ビショフトゥで10月2日、エチオピア最大民族オロモ族の祭りが反政府デモに発展し、治安部隊が催涙ガスなどで鎮圧しようとしたところ参加者が折り重なって倒れ、55人が死亡した。BBCなどが報じた。
オロモ族は、1億人いるエチオピアの人口のおよそ3分の1を占めているが、長年にわたって政府の弾圧を受けている。人権団体アムネスティ・インターナショナルによると、2011年からの4年間で少なくとも5000人のオロモ族が反体制的という理由で逮捕されている。また、ヒューマン・ライツ・ウォッチによると、オロミア州の土地強制収用をめぐり、2015年11月以降400人以上のデモ参加者が殺害され、数万人が逮捕されている。
2日はビショフトゥでオロモ族が雨期明けを祝う感謝祭「イレチャ」が行われていたが、一部の参加者が反政府的なスローガンを叫び始めたところから、抗議デモに発展した。参加者たちが投石を始めたため、治安部隊が催涙弾を撃ったところ、逃げ出した参加者たちが折り重なるように次々と倒れた。
ロイターによると、地元政府の発表で55人が死亡、100人が負傷した。一方、オロモ族で構成される野党幹部はおよそ150人が死亡したと語った。
オロモ族による抗議活動として、リオデジャネイロオリンピックの男子マラソンで銀メダルを獲得したオロモ族のフェイサ・リレサが、反政府を象徴する「頭の前で両手を交差させるポーズ」でゴールしたことが注目を集めた。
