字体の専門家や、デザインオタクであれば、違いに気付くかもしれない。けれども、それ以外の人たちには解説が必要だろう。
今回の変更は、カーニングにおけるわずかな調整だ。カーニングとは、文字同士の間隔を調整するための技法のことだ。
今回は、「g」と「l」の間にあった間隔について、「g」を1ピクセルだけ右に移動し、「l」を右と下に1ピクセルずつ移動するという変更が行われた。
この微妙な変更によって、ロゴ全体の見栄えがよくなり、文字が読みやすくなるのだという。
「Reddit」では数日前に、この変更に気付いて指摘する投稿が現れ、議論が行われている。ハフポストアメリカ版がこの投稿についてGoogle社に確認したところ、同社はロゴを微調整したと認めた。同社の広報はこう述べている。
「わずか1ピクセル単位の変更にも気がついて、理解してくれる人々がいることを知ってとても嬉しいです。われわれはたしかに、しばらく前にロゴの微調整を行いました。画面の解像度に左右されずに、ロゴが確実にシャープな状態で表示されるようにするためです」
