『スター・トレック』シリーズのミスター・スポック役で知られた俳優のLeonard Nimoy (レナード・ニモイ)氏が米国時間の27日、肺疾患により亡くなりました。83歳でした。
レナード・ニモイ氏は1931年3月26日生。米国マサチューセッツ州に、ロシア(当時はソビエト連邦、現ウクライナ)移民のユダヤ人一家に生まれ、子供時代から役者を志しました。職業俳優としての活躍は1951年から。
初期は生活のため演技だけでなく新聞配達などの仕事もしていましたが、やがてテレビドラマや舞台で俳優としてのキャリアを積み、1965年の『スター・トレック』パイロット版からは当たり役の異星人ミスター・スポックを演じました。
スター・トレックはTVシリーズやスピンオフが延々と作られ続ける一大産業に発展し、ニモイ氏も2009年と2013年のリブート作品を含め長編映画8本に出演しています。映画監督としても初期のスター・トレック映画第三弾と第四弾のほか10数本を手がけ、1987年のコメディ映画スリーメン＆ベビーでヒットを飛ばしました。ほか2011年のトランスフォーマー映画Darkside of the Moon のセンチネル・プライム役など、映画やテレビ、ゲームでの声の出演も多数。
演技者として60年を超えるキャリアを持ちながら、やはりミスター・スポックとしての印象と存在感は絶大であり、自伝でももうひとりの自分となったスポックとの葛藤を語っています。二冊の自伝のタイトルは1975年の I Am Not Spock 、そして1995年の I Am Spock (邦訳 わたしはスポック)。
ニモイ氏は本人のTwitterアカウントでも発言しており、ここ数日は人生について、ファンへの別れの言葉とも思えるツイートを残しています。
