太平洋戦争開戦の舞台となったアメリカのハワイ・真珠湾で、終戦から70年となる2015年の8月15日に、日本有数の花火である新潟県長岡市の花火が初めて打ち上げられる見通しになった。長岡市とハワイ州ホノルル市が8月2日、合意した。
長岡市は真珠湾攻撃を指揮した旧日本海軍の山本五十六連合艦隊司令長官の出身地で、1945年8月1日にはアメリカ軍の空襲を受けた（長岡空襲）。双方が戦没者の鎮魂と平和を願い、大輪の花を夏の夜空に咲かせる。毎日新聞などが報じた。
両市の交流は、真珠湾攻撃を指揮した旧日本海軍連合艦隊司令長官・山本五十六が長岡市出身で日米開戦反対論者だったこともあって、相互理解を深めるため2007年から始まった。12年には姉妹都市提携を結び、ワイキキ沖で花火を打ち上げた。真珠湾での花火は、来年8月に両市で開く市民交流の記念事業の締めくくりとする計画で、詳細は今後検討するという。
長岡市内で今月2日にあった両市の「日米友好記念事業委員会」で合意した。森民夫・長岡市長は「メッセージを持った花火で平和の大切さを伝えるのは長岡市の責任」と、取り組みの意義を強調した。ホノルル市のカーク・コールドウェル市長は「真珠湾で打ち上げる花火は歴史的な出来事になる」と歓迎した。

■日独伊三国同盟に反対した山本五十六
コトバンクによると、山本五十六は1884（明治17）年生まれで海軍大学校卒。アメリカ駐在経験がある知米派で日独伊三国同盟に反対した。連合艦隊司令長官として、太平洋戦争で真珠湾攻撃やミッドウェー海戦などを指揮し、1943年に南太平洋ブーゲンビル島上空で戦死した。
山本は、人心掌握の心得を示した「やってみせ、言って聞かせて、させてみて、ほめてやらねば、人は動かじ」の言葉を残した。
１９４０年、日本海軍連合艦隊司令長官時代の山本五十六海軍大将。１９４１年１２月７日（日本時間１２月８日）、太平洋戦争劈頭〔へきとう）のハワイ所在の米海軍真珠湾軍港奇襲攻撃を立案し、指揮下機動部隊を訓練してこれを実行させた（アメリカ・ワシントン）
長岡花火の始まりは1879（明治12）年。戦時中は中断されたが、1485人が亡くなった1945年の長岡空襲の慰霊と復興を祈って1947年に復活した。
真珠湾には、太平洋でのアメリカの重要軍事基地パール･ハーバー海軍基地があり、太平洋艦隊の司令部が置かれている。
