白いクジラは非常に希少だと言われており、CNNによると、2012年時点では、目撃記録が記録があるのはミガルーのみだとされていた。ミガルーは1991年に初めて目撃され、土地の言葉で「白いやつ」を意味する「ミガルー」という名前が付けられた。
その後、世界で目撃された白鯨は3匹となった。今回目撃された個体はミガルーよりも小さいため、研究者は「ミガルー・ジュニア（ミガルーの子供）ではないか」と話しているという。
