ブルームバーグによると、イギリスのウィリアム王子夫妻は24日、2日前に誕生した第一子の男児をジョージ・アレクサンダー・ルイと命名したとケンジントン宮殿から電子メールで発表した。
「プリンス・ジョージ・オブ・ケンブリッジ」の称号が与えられ、ジョージ王子と呼ばれることになる。イギリス王室では、複数のミドルネームを付けるのが慣例で、「ジョージ・アレクサンダー・ルイ」がジョージ王子のフルネームとなる。
CNNによると、王室のメンバーはファーストネームのほかにもたくさんの名前を持つことが多い。チャールズ皇太子はチャールズ・フィリップ・アーサー・ジョージ、エリザベス女王はエリザベス・アレクサンドラ・メアリーといった具合だ。歴代君主の中には7～8個の名前がついたケースもある。即位とともに名前が変わるという伝統もあり、チャールズ皇太子はジョージ7世を名乗るとみられている。
ジョージは歴代の英国王の代表的な名前の一つ。エリザベス女王(87)の父親はジョージ6世で、映画「英国王のスピーチ」でも有名だ。
どのような名前が付けられるかという予想も加熱していたが、賭け屋(ブックメーカー)ではジョージとジェームズが人気だった。
キャサリン妃の評伝執筆者、クローディア・ジョセフ氏はCNNとのインタビューで「ウィリアム王子夫妻はとても21世紀らしいカップルだが、未来の国王となる赤ちゃんには伝統的な名前を選ぶのではないか」と語っていた。
