ハンガリーの首都ブダペストで4月9日、ヴィクトル・オルバン首相の退陣を求める8万人規模のデモが起きた。

きっかけは、ハンガリー出身のアメリカの投資家・慈善家ジョージ・ソロス氏が25年前に創設した私立大学院大学「中央ヨーロッパ大学(CEU)」を、政府が閉鎖に追い込もうとしたからだ。

今回のデモは、保守派政権が推し進める新しい教育政策に反対するデモの中でも最大規模となった。新たな教育法の改正案では、アメリカとハンガリーの両方で認定されているCEUのような外国の大学が、ハンガリーだけでなく、登録元の他の国でも教育活動を実施することを義務付けている。この法改正によって、CEUは閉鎖を余儀なくされる可能性がある。

ブタペストでは12日にも1万人規模の抗議デモが発生し、広場に集まった参加者たちは人文字で大きなハート形をつくり、中央に「CIVIL」(市民)の文字を型取り、オルバン政権に抗議した。

CEU存続の支持者によると、この法案はCEUを標的にしているという。オルバン首相はソロス氏を非難し、ヨーロッパで移民や多文化主義を推進する機関や政策を廃止しようとしている。

「政府は、自分たちと考えが違う人、自由に考える人、リベラル・左派の可能性がある人たちを封じ込めようとしている」と、デモの主催者でドイツ・ビーレフェルト大学博士課程の学生コルネル・クロフトシュタインさんはロイターに語った。

ブダペストにあるアメリカ大使館のデビッド・コステランニック代理大使は3月、法案への反対を表明した。

法案の成立にはアーデル・ヤーノシュ大統領の署名が必要となる。CEUの職員は「あらゆる法的救済措置」で対抗する用意があると述べている。
