トルコのエルドアン政権は15日夜(日本時間16日未明)、デモ隊が占拠していたイスタンブール中心部のゲジ公園に警官隊を突入させ、デモ隊を強制排除した。公園一帯は警官隊が配置され、警戒態勢がひかれているが、公園周辺や郊外でデモ隊と警官隊との衝突が発生し、混乱が続いている。

ロイター通信によると、ゲジ公園に隣接するタクシム広場付近の通りでは、警官隊が催涙弾などで若者らを排除し、再びデモが発生しないよう警戒を続けている。また、16日午後、アンカラのクズライ広場でデモ隊と警察隊が衝突。催涙弾や放水車が使われ、少なくとも4人が負傷したとBBCが伝えている。

国内2労組は当局によるデモ隊強制排除を受け、17日の全国スト実施を呼びかけた。医師やエンジニアなどの労働団体も参加する見通しとロイター通信が報じている。

先月31日にデモが激化してから、2週間以上混乱が続いている。エルドアン首相側はデモのきっかけの一つとなったゲジ公園の再開発計画を一時見合わせ、計画の是非を問う住民投票を実施するなどの譲歩案を示していたが、デモ隊側が退去を拒否。エルドアン首相は沈静に向け、現地時間の15日、デモ隊の強制排除に踏み切った。

東京新聞によると、警官隊はゲジ公園やタクシム広場に集まったデモ隊に対し、特殊車両で放水し、催涙弾を発射。強制排除の際の緊迫した様子を今村実記者が次のように伝えている。

ガスの激しい白煙に押し出されるように公園からデモ参加者が次々走り出た。広場にいた記者も催涙ガスで涙が止まらず息苦しくなり、外に避難しようとしたが、どの道路も警官隊が立ちふさがり封鎖。デモ隊を閉じ込め、恐怖心をあおる戦術だろうか。近くのレストランが、他のデモ参加者とともに調理室に三十分ほどかくまってくれた。

一方、エルドアン首相支持者は16日、約10万人が集まる大規模な集会を開いた。時事通信によると、首相はイスラム系与党、公正発展党(AKP)の集会に出席。「首相としての義務だ」とデモを正当化した。首相の人気ぶりを演出するのが狙いだったとみられる。

イスタンブールは、東京、スペイン・マドリードとともに、2020年夏季五輪の招致レースを競っている。デモ隊の強制排除が行われた15日、スイス・ローザンヌで各国オリンピック委員会連合(ANOC)総会が開かれ、トルコは2020年夏季五輪招致のプレゼンテーションを行った。

朝日新聞デジタルによると、イスタンブール五輪招致委員会は、デモについて「民主国家への道は簡単ではないが、正しいものだ。対話を歓迎し、抗議が収まることを望む」とし、「さらに良い開催都市になれるだろう」と説明したという。
