ユナイテッド航空が従業員用の座席を確保するため、乗客を航空機から引き出した事件から、およそ3週間。窮地に立たされたユナイテッド航空は、「顧客経験の向上」を目指す、一連の新たな運営方針を発表した。

4月27日、運営手法の改革案10項目の概要を示す覚書が発表された。最も劇的に見直されるのは、座席を自主的に譲った乗客に対する補償金の金額で、今後は最大1万ドル(約111万円)を支払うとしている。

新たに設定された補償金の上限額は、デルタ航空と同等の金額となっている。デイビッド・ダオ医師(69)がシカゴ発ケンタッキー州ルイビル行きのユナイテッド航空の飛行機から無理やり降ろされる様子を撮影した動画が公開されてからわずか数日後、デルタ航空は補償金の増額を発表した。ユナイテッド航空は3411便の搭乗客に対し、 座席を譲り渡す見返りとしてまず400ドル、次に800ドルの補償金支払いを申し出たが、譲渡に応じる乗客はいなかった。ダオさんはすでに飛行機に乗り込んでいたが、抽選の結果、座席を譲る乗客に選ばれた。

ユナイテッド航空とダオさんは同日、和解したことを発表し、和解金が支払われた。金額は公表しないという。

批判に晒され続けたユナイテッド航空CEOオスカー・ムニョス氏は、ダオさんを巻き込み国際的な批判を巻き起こした事件の調査結果から、新たな業務手続を策定した、と述べた。

「調査の結果、事件の日は多くの手違いが起きていたことが明らかになりました。しかし、要点は簡潔です。運営方針が価値判断の妨げとなり、業務手続きよって正しい行動が阻まれたのです」と、ムニョス氏は声明の中でそう述べた。

ユナイテッド航空はこのほか、「オーバーブッキング便の削減」、「警察による対処は、安全に関わる問題が発生した場合のみに限定する」などの再発防止策を提示した。

アメリカ上院では、座席をめぐるユナイテッド航空の失態の再発を防止する法案を提出した。新たな法律が成立すれば、航空会社がすでに飛行機に搭乗済みの乗客を搭乗拒否することは、安全や健康上の危険性がない限り禁止とされる。
