アメリカの首都ワシントンにある桜が、見頃を迎えている。ワシントンの中心部にある国立公園ナショナル・モールは3月26日、同園の桜が満開になったとツイート。Twitterにはワシントンの桜の画像が多数投稿されている。
「全米桜祭り」の公式サイトによると、これらの桜は、1912年に当時の東京市の市長・尾崎行雄から贈られたもの。日米友好を願い、苗木3000本が送られた。
以降、1965年に3800本を追加寄贈。2012年にはミシェル・オバマ氏も、ポトマック川岸に記念植樹をした。
