モスクワで行われているフェンシング世界選手権で7月16日、男子フルーレの太田雄貴（29）が金メダルを獲得した。オリンピック、世界選手権を通じて世界一となったのは、個人、団体を通じて初めて。
太田は準々決勝でロンドンオリンピック（2012年）金メダルの雷声（中国）を、準決勝でゲレク・マインハート（アメリカ）をともに15―9で破って決勝に進出。決勝ではアレクサンダー・マシアラス（アメリカ）を15―10で破り、銅メダルを獲得した2010年大会以来の表彰台に上った。
試合の後、太田は国際フェンシング連盟の取材に対し「とても厳しい試合だった。特に準決勝のゲレク・マインハートの試合が厳しかった」とコメント。「ベストを尽くすだけだった」と話した。日刊スポーツによると、「やってきたことを遂行することだけを愚直にやった。人生の最後の世界選手権になるかもしれないと思って挑んだ。最後の最後でこうやってタイトルを取れて本当にうれしい。次は（来年に）団体での五輪の金メダルをみんなで分かち合いたい」と述べたという。
そして、太田はTwitterに喜びのコメントを連投。そのなかで、2006年から師事してきたマツェイチュク・オレグコーチに深い感謝の思いをつづっている。
2013年8月に放送されたNHK BS1「為末大が読み解く！勝利へのセオリー」によると、オレグコーチはウクライナ出身。選手時代は無名だったが、海外選手に比べて小柄な体型の日本人選手の特徴を活かした戦い方で、日本チームをオリンピック銀メダルを獲得するまでに成長させたという。
太田は2012年10月、ロンドンオリンピックで銀メダルを獲得したあとに出演したTBS系「A-Studio」で、オレグコーチとはもともと仲が悪かったことを紹介している。凄いコーチだとわかっていてもプライドが邪魔して指導を拒んだ太田。その後、自己流での限界を感じ「あなたの犬になりますから勝たせてくれ。勝つためならなんでもする」と指導を頼んだという。その後、2週間の指導でアジア大会に優勝したと、太田は話していた。
