リオデジャネイロ・オリンピックの閉会式で安倍晋三首相がスーパーマリオに扮した演出について、2020年東京五輪組織委員会の武藤敏郎事務総長は8月22日の現地での会見で「（組織委の）森喜朗会長が提案し、総理が快諾したと聞いている。日本や東京を発信していくのに最も適任者だった」と述べた。
武藤氏の発言について、日刊スポーツは次のように伝えた。
そもそも、マリオを登場させたのは、「昨年から『リオ』でマ『リオ』の構想があった」といい、「リオ」のフレーズに近いマリオに、白羽の矢が立ったことを明かした。オヤジギャグに近い感覚が、マリオ登場のスタートだったようだ。
プレゼンの映像でも、ドラえもんのポケットから出てきた土管を使って、リオにワープしようとするマリオが、地図を広げる様子が登場する。地図には「ＲＩＯ」と書かれているが、マリオがもう一方のページを広げると「ＭＡ」の文字が出てきて、２つを合わせると「ＭＡＲＩＯ」になる、伏線のような仕掛けが行われていた。

閉会式では日本と東京を紹介するパフォーマンスが行われ、ハローキティや「キャプテン翼」の大空翼も登場した。閉会式で流された映像の中で東京で赤いボールを受け取った安倍首相は、リオに届けるためにマリオに変身。土管を通って東京からリオにたどり着くという設定で、マラカナン競技場の土管の上に現れた。このパフォーマンスは海外でも話題となった。
