ケニア北東部のガリッサで2日、イスラム過激派の武装集団がガリッサ大学のキャンパスを襲撃し、これまでに少なくとも147人の死亡が確認された。負傷者は79人に上っている。

武装集団はキリスト教の学生を人質に取り、治安当局と数時間にわたって銃撃戦となった。ケニア警察当局は声明で、警察と軍隊が大学を包囲し、武装集団の掃討を試みていると明らかにした。

ソマリアを中心に活動するアルカイダ系武装組織アルシャバーブが犯行声明を出し、多数のキリスト教徒を人質に取っていることを認めた。警察によると、武装集団は大学の敷地内で無差別に発砲したという。

ケニア内務相はガリッサで行った記者会見で、815人の学生のうち約500人の所在を確認したことを明らかにした。また、アルシャバーブに属する銃撃犯は4人とも射殺され、更なる攻撃の脅威はほぼ解消されたとしている。

同記者会見で警察はケニア政府がソマリアとの国境に近い4地域で午後6時半から午前6時半までの外出禁止令を発令したと発表した。

ケニアでは過去にもアルシャバーブが襲撃事件を起こしており、2013年には首都ナイロビのショッピングモールが襲撃された。
