Amazonが、驚愕の(と言ってよいだろう)サービスを提供しようとしているらしい。Kindle利用者に対し、60万もの電子書籍およびオーディオブックを月額9ドル99セントにて無制限に提供しようとするサービスだ。情報のでどころはこちらのキャッシュに残るウェブページだ。本件を最初に報じたのはGigaOMだった。
これは、たとえばスタートアップのOysterなどが提供しようとする「電子書籍版Netflix」を大規模に展開しようとするものといえよう。Kindleはかなりの成功を納めており、Amazonの利用者も多い。類似サービスと比較して規模の麺では圧倒することとなりそうだ。但し、先ほどのキャッシュが残るページには、Oysterには提供を行なっているSimon & Schuster、HarperCollinsなど、いわゆるビッグファイブからの書籍提供については言及されていない。
最大手の出版社は多額(米ドルにて最低7桁)の前払金を求め、さらに読まれるごとに費用が発生するという仕組みを求めている様子。また、新刊書は従来のようにまずは通常の販売チャネル用として確保しておきたいと考えている。Amazonとしてはそうした例外的条件をつけることなくサービスの展開を行いたいわけで、そうした両者の思惑のぶつかり合いから、先述のページにビッグファイブの名前が見られない状況となっているのだろう。
さらにAmazonはAudibleを買収し、Whyspersync for Voiceという機能を通じて8000ほどのオーディオブックを提供しているのも大きな魅力となるだろう。利用者は目的や状況に応じて、電子書籍とオーディオブックを自在に切り替えて楽しめるようにもなる。
このKindle UnlimitedはAmazonにとっても新たなチャレンジとなるものだ。書籍関連分野に限定したもので、たとえばAmazonプライムなどとは独立したサービスとして展開されることになるのだろう。これまで年間99ドルのプライム会員費用にてサブスクリプションサービス(インスタント・ビデオ、Kindle Lending Library、そしてPrime Music)を展開していた。そのような中、独立したサービスとしてKindle Unlimitedを投入することで、さらなる売上向上を目指すことができるようになるわけだ。しかもこのサービスの対象となる人は、Amazonの最も熱心な利用者層でもある。
