1950年代から70年代に大活躍したアメリカの男子プロゴルファー、アーノルド・パーマーさんが9月25日、ペンシルベニア州ピッツバーグで死去した。87歳。USAトゥデーGolfweekなどが伝えている。

ゴルフ界の偉大な英雄、アーノルド・パーマーさんの死を深く悼みます。

地元紙ピッツバーグ・ポスト・ガゼットによると、パーマーさんは22日からピッツバーグ大学医療センターで心臓の検査を受けていた。

全米プロゴルフ協会(PGA)ツアーで通算62勝したほか、マスターズ・トーナメントで4回優勝、全米オープン、全英オープンなどのメジャー選手権でも数多くの優勝歴を持つ。賞金総額100万ドルを達成した初めてのプロゴルファーでもある。1974年には世界ゴルフ殿堂入りを果たした。

1929年9月10日、アメリカ・ペンシルベニア州ラトローブ生まれ。ゴルフコースのグランドキーパーだった父親から3歳でゴルフを教わった。沿岸警備隊を経て、1954年にプロに転向した。

恵まれた才能と明るい性格で多くのファンとライバルに恵まれた。力強いスイングのスタイルを確立して数々の名場面を生み出し、テレビ向きのスポーツとしてゴルフが注目されるきっかけにもなった。

「アーノルドはゴルフを変えた」。パーマーさんの友人であり、ライバルでもあったジャック・ニクラウスさんは25日、声明を発表した。「彼は偉大なゴルファーであり、ゴルファーを超越した存在だった。象徴であり、伝説だった。アーノルドはゴルフの先駆者だった。彼自身の手で、ゴルフのレベルは一段と引き上げられた」

2006年の引退後は慈善活動にも取り組んだ。ゴルフや社会活動の功績が認められ、2004年にアメリカ大統領自由勲章、2012年には議会から金メダルを授与されている。

1950年代後半から70年代にかけて不動の人気を誇り、日本では傘のマークが入ったポロシャツや靴下などの衣料品ブランド「アーノルド・パーマー」も発売され人気を博した。アメリカでも数多くのコマーシャルに出演し、2002年には「アーノルド・パーマー・ティー」というアイスレモンティーが発売されている。

その腕前と熱意で、ゴルフ界における最初のスターとなり、ゴルフを人気スポーツに押し上げることに貢献した
