映画「ガンジー」で第55回アカデミー賞監督賞を受賞し、「大脱走」や「ジュラシック・パーク」などに出演したイギリスの映画監督で俳優のリチャード・アッテンボローさんが8月24日、亡くなった。90歳だった。時事ドットコムなどが報じた。
BBCによれば、近年は妻で元女優のシーラ・シムさんと共に介護施設に入り、車椅子での生活を送っていた。キャメロン首相はツイッターで「映画界の巨人の一人だった」と悼んだ。
23年、英中部ケンブリッジ生まれ。王立演劇学校を経て40年代から俳優として活動、「大脱走」（63年）、「ジュラシック・パーク」（93年）など多くの作品に出演した。

監督としては、インド独立運動を指導したマハトマ・ガンジーの生涯を描いた大作「ガンジー」（1982年）で作品賞や監督賞を含むアカデミー賞8部門を受賞した。ほかにも、南アフリカの黒人解放運動の指導者を主人公にした「遠い夜明け」（1987年）やミュージカル映画の名作「コーラスライン」（1985年）、喜劇王チャプリンの生涯を描いた「チャーリー」（1992年）などを手掛けた。
3人の子供がいたが、2004年のスマトラ沖地震の津波の際にタイで休暇中だった長女や孫娘を失っている。
