ナイジェリアを拠点とするイスラム過激派組織「ボコ・ハラム」によって、同国ではこの6年間で数千もの人が殺害され、約150万人が住む場所を追われた。チャドのダルエスサラーム難民キャンプには、ボコ・ハラムによる襲撃から、命からがら逃げてきた難民が収容されている。ユニセフ(国連児童基金)によると、キャンプには家族と離ればなれになったり、親を亡くしたりした子供たちが、4月の段階で126人も収容されていた。

レイプや誘拐、その他、ボコ・ハラムによる数々の残忍な行為を目撃した子供たちが、心の病にかかるリスクは高い。しかし、子供たちには、トラウマをケアするどころか、生き延びていくための道すらほとんどないのが現状だ。幼い弟と甥、さらに隣の4人の子供の手をつかんで逃げてきた16歳の少女・アベニは、まだ難民カードの発行を受けられていない。そのため、彼女や連れてきた子供たちの誰もが、食料をもらうことができず、おなかをすかせている。

そんな子供たちの心の傷を少しでもを癒やしたいと、国際NGO「国境なき医師団」は3月、キャンプ内に診療所を開設し、心のケアの導入に踏み切った。治療の一つが、子供たちが目にした残虐行為を絵に描かせることだ。カウンセリングを行った心理学者のオーレリア・モラビト氏は、子供たちが銃やヘリコプター、首を切断された胴体など、筆舌に尽くしがたい絵を描いたと国境なき医師団に語った。

国境なき医師団によると、診療所を訪れた難民のうち4人に1人がうつ病の兆候を示しており、なかには睡眠障害やトラウマから不安神経症を患うこともよくあるのだという。

トラウマに悩む子供たちに絵を描く機会を与えることで、子供たちが安全だと感じ、大きな不安や心配ごとを絵で表現できるような環境を作ることができる。

「子供にとっては、絵を使ったほうが恐怖を表現しやすいのです」、とモラビト氏は国境なき医師団に語った。描いた後にその絵について話すことで、子供たちが恐怖をコントロールをしやすいのだという。

このプログラムは、子供だけでなく、個人や家族、夫婦に対するカウンセリングも含まれる。国境なき医師団は、プログラムの開始以来、524人の患者の治療を行ったという。
