ロイターによると、原油流出の幅は沿岸の約6キロに及び、沖合14キロまで広がっている。
ロサンゼルス・タイムズによると、アメリカ環境保護庁の現場担当者ミッシェル・ロゴー氏は、海面からの原油の除去や汚染された砂を袋に入れる作業を24時間体制で行っていると述べた。
ペリカンやアシカ、ロブスターなど、多くの海洋生物が原油にまみれ、生態系への影響も懸念される。
