アメリカ・カリフォルニア州のサンタバーバラ郡で5月19日に発生したパイプライン破裂事故で、およそ10万5000ガロン(約40万リットル)の原油が流出し、そのうち海に約2万1000ガロン(約8万リットル)流出したとみられ、地元では懸命の除去活動が続いている。ロイターが報じた。

ジェリー・ブラウン州知事は非常事態を宣言し、専門チームを派遣して原油の除去を急ぐと表明した。

ロイターによると、原油流出の幅は沿岸の約6キロに及び、沖合14キロまで広がっている。

ロサンゼルス・タイムズによると、アメリカ環境保護庁の現場担当者ミッシェル・ロゴー氏は、海面からの原油の除去や汚染された砂を袋に入れる作業を24時間体制で行っていると述べた。

ペリカンやアシカ、ロブスターなど、多くの海洋生物が原油にまみれ、生態系への影響も懸念される。
