フィリピン中部セブ島の港近くで8月16日午後9時(日本時間午後10時)前、乗ったフェリーが貨物船と衝突し、沈没した。地元メディアによると、フェリーが入港しようとした際、港から出てきた貨物船と衝突した。沿岸警備隊や周辺の船が救助活動を続けている。

17日朝の時点で少なくとも24人が死亡、274人が行方不明となっている

AFP通信によると、セブの港近くで沈没したフェリー「トマス・アキナス(Thomas Aquinas)号」には870人が乗船していた。これまでに572人が救助されたという。首都マニラ(Manila)の沿岸警備隊本部広報室によると、乗客名簿には692人が乗船と書かれていたが、フィリピンのフェリーでは超過乗船が珍しくない。

沈没したフェリーから救助されたフィリピン人乗客の1人は地元メディアに「乗客のほとんどが眠っている時に突然、衝撃があり、船が徐々に沈み始めた。みんなパニックになって次々と海に飛び込んだ」と振り返った
