NFLのサンフランシスコ49ers所属のクォーターバック(QB)コリン・キャパニックは、アメリカで黒人や有色人種への人種差別的な事件が多発することに抗議して、国家斉唱で起立を拒否し続けている。

キャパニックは10月12日、最高裁判事ルース・ベイダー・ギンズバーグ氏が最近、彼の国家に対する反抗を批判したことを聞いて、「失望した」と述べた。

ギンズバーグ氏はYahooニュースに、キャパニックが人種差別への注意を喚起するために星条旗に敬意を表さない決断をしたことは「愚かで無礼なことだ」と伝えた。彼女はキャパニックの行為を国旗に燃やすことにたとえ、違法ではないが「酷いことだ」と述べた。

ギンズバーグ氏は、1993年8月クリントン大統領によって最高裁判事に任命され、リベラル派の判事として知られている。通常、最高裁判事は政治的ととられる発言を控えるが、アメリカ大統領選について「トランプはペテン師。一貫性がなく、その瞬間に頭に入ったことを何でも言う」と批判するなど、異例の発言が続いている。

キャパニックは、「みんな国旗にとらわれすぎている」と付け加えた。

「結局、国旗なんて布きれにすぎない。俺はそこに人の命以上の価値があるとは思わない」と彼は言った。「それは俺がすることではない。道徳的に正しいことじゃない。俺の性格からして、それはできない」

キャパニックをはじめ、プロスポーツ選手たちはここ数カ月、警察によるマイノリティへの暴力に人々の関心を高めるため、国歌に敬意を示していない。この動きは高校や大学のスポーツにも広がっており、選手たちは団結して、膝をつき、座り込み、または拳を突き上げている。
