先発の黒田が8回を3安打2失点と好投し、5-2で迎えた9回、ヤンキースは抑えのロバートソンが2本塁打を浴びて同点に追いつかれてしまう。黒田の白星は消えたが、その裏、1死二塁と絶好の場面でジーターに打席が回り、サヨナラ打となる右前適時打。この日の“主役”の一打でドラマは幕を閉じた。
球場全体が大歓声に包まれる中、ジラルディ監督やイチローらナインと抱擁。自らのバットで激闘にピリオドを打った背番号2は「泣かないように努めた。正直言ってきょうはどんなプレーをしたか覚えていない」と涙をこらえた。

ヤンキース一筋20年。ジーターは「皆さんに『サンキュー、デレク』と言ってもらえましたけれど、自分はただ自分の仕事をしただけです。皆さんにありがとうと言いたいです」とファンへの感謝の言葉を口にした。
先発した黒田博樹投手（39）は8回3安打2失点、無四球で9三振を奪う力投を見せたものの、9回に救援が打たれて今季12勝目を逃した。イチロー（40）は「8番・右翼」で出場して3打数無安打1得点。
かつてのチームの同僚、松井秀喜氏（40）は、ヤンキースタジアムでNHKテレビのゲスト解説をしながら観戦した。「9回表に同点になった時点で、こうなるんじゃないかという感じがしました。それをやるのがデレク・ジーター。驚いていないですよ、僕自身は」と話した。
