アメリカ・サウスカロライナ州チャールストンにあるエマニュエル・アフリカン・メソジスト・エピスコパル教会で2015年6月17日に発生した銃乱射事件のディラン・ルーフ被告(22)が、サウスカロライナの拘置所で黒人の被告に襲撃されて負傷した。

ルーフ被告は2015年6月17日午後9時ごろ、エマニュエル・アフリカン・メソジスト・エピスコパル教会に入り、週定例の聖書勉強会に参加したが、開始からおよそ1時間後に銃を乱射した。女性信者6人と男性信者3人の計9人が死亡した。

USAトゥデーによると、チャールストン郡のアル・カノン・ジュニア保安官は会見で、ルーフ被告と弁護人は、スタッフォード被告への告発はしないことに決めたと述べた。

カノン保安官はさらに、スタッフォード被告が人種的な動機で襲撃したかどうかはわからないとし、状況を考えた上で推測はしないと述べた。

ルーフ被告は連邦裁判所と州立裁判所の両方で殺人罪など33の罪に問われ、死刑判決が下される可能性がある。7月に検察が裁判所に提出した記録によると、ルーフ被告はグロック社製の連発銃8丁を使い、およそ80回にわたり銃撃したという。ルーフ被告は何カ月も前から銃乱射を計画し、教会の聖書研究会に参加していた。2015年2月ごろには黒人を蔑視する「マニフェスト」をサイトに掲載しており、教会の銃乱射も黒人蔑視からくるヘイトクライム(憎悪犯罪)だとされた。ルーフ被告は取り調べに対し容疑を認め、「人種間の戦争を始める狙いがあった」と供述しているという。

また、ルーフ被告が「奴隷制の象徴」ともされる南北戦争時の南軍旗と写真を撮っていたことから、アメリカ国内で南北旗をめぐる論争が激化し、サウスカロライナ州議会議事堂の南軍旗が撤去される事態となるなど、この事件が人種間の論争を巻き起こすきっかけともなった。
